Biblical Rest: Setting Boundaries with Your Time

by Mar 29, 2025Blog0 comments

In a world that glorifies hustle, many of us struggle to slow down. We feel guilty for resting, afraid that if we don’t keep pushing, everything will fall apart. But did you know that God commands us to rest?

God’s Design for Rest

From the very beginning, God established rest as a priority. After creating the world, He rested on the seventh day (Genesis 2:2-3). Not because He was tired, but to set an example for us.

Jesus also demonstrated the importance of rest. Even in the middle of His ministry—when crowds pressed in and people needed Him—He often withdrew to quiet places to pray (Luke 5:16). If Jesus, the Son of God, took time to rest, how much more should we?

Why We Struggle to Rest

Many women feel guilty about taking time for themselves. Whether it’s work, family, or ministry, we’ve been conditioned to believe that we must always be available. But constantly pouring out without refilling leads to burnout, resentment, and exhaustion.

Here’s why we struggle to rest:
✔️ We fear disappointing others – Saying “no” feels like letting people down.
✔️ We tie our worth to productivity – If we’re not “doing,” we feel useless.
✔️ We don’t trust God fully – We think everything depends on us, rather than trusting God to sustain us.

Setting Boundaries for Biblical Rest

God calls us to rest, but we have to be intentional about making it happen. Here’s how:

1. Honor the Sabbath

Exodus 20:8 says, “Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy.” This doesn’t mean legalistic rules—it means dedicating time for rest, worship, and renewal. Set aside a day (or even a few hours) to disconnect from work and reconnect with God.

2. Create Sacred Time for God

If your schedule is too busy for prayer, Bible study, or quiet time, it’s time to set boundaries. Block out time for God daily—even if it’s just 15 minutes in the morning.

3. Set Work & Social Media Limits

Are work emails and social media notifications stealing your peace? Set boundaries by:
✔️ Turning off work notifications outside of work hours.
✔️ Setting a time limit on social media apps.
✔️ Scheduling offline time to be fully present with family and God.

4. Say ‘No’ Without Guilt

Not every opportunity is your assignment. Jesus didn’t say ‘yes’ to everyone—He focused on what God called Him to do. When asked to help, ask yourself:
Is this something God is asking me to do?
Will this pull me away from the rest I need?
Can I serve without resentment or burnout?

If the answer is no, it’s okay to say no.

Embrace Rest as Worship

Resting isn’t laziness—it’s an act of trust. When you set boundaries with your time, you’re saying, “God, I trust You to sustain me.”
